"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson
We will read this story of a Dystopian Society. As we read, we will highlight the elements of the story that feel strange and foreign to us. What is truly going on here? Why do these people just accept life the way it is? Why not fight it or change it? What things in our society do we accept without reservation that we might ought to stop and question?

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This totalitarian government, known as The Capitol, has created the Hunger Games as a form of entertainment. Since only the upper class are members of the Capitol, they do not have to worry about the consequences of their actions - there is very little moral code in the future society of The Hunger Games. With Panem being split into different districts that serve their own purposes, the Capitol has decided that each district must pay their share and contribute.
Thus, two tributes (game players) are chosen from each district of Panem and must fight for their lives if they wish to survive to the next round. This year, Katniss and Peeta are selected, and they realize that these games are not only very real, but very dangerous. From taking different weapons to trying avoid being killed by other teens in a brutal and bloody competition, Katniss and Peeta decide they will do all they can to help each other and survive the Hunger Games.

"Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
In this futuristic Utopian story, the perfect world of handbands and equality quickly shows itself not to be perfect at all. How do you feel about the sanctions on the people of this society? What problems do they solve, and what new problems do they create?
